The One-Year Rule: A Simple Decluttering Strategy That Works

Posted by on

At Caring Transitions of Winston Salem, we know that downsizing and decluttering can feel overwhelming, especially when faced with years—sometimes decades—of accumulated belongings. One of the simplest and most effective strategies we recommend to our clients is the "One-Year Rule."

This rule is simple: If you haven’t used an item in the last 12 months, ask yourself—do I really need it?

While there are exceptions, this method provides a quick decision-making tool to help you part with things that no longer serve a purpose. Whether you’re planning a move, managing an estate, or just looking to reclaim your space, the One-Year Rule can make the process easier.

Why the One-Year Rule Works

Reduces Decision Fatigue – Instead of overanalyzing each item, this rule offers a clear, objective way to decide what stays and what goes.

Eliminates “Someday” Thinking – Holding onto things “just in case” often leads to cluttered spaces. If you haven’t needed it in the past year, chances are you won’t miss it moving forward.

Creates a More Functional Space – Less clutter means easier organization, less stress, and more time for what truly matters.

How to Apply the One-Year Rule

1. Start Small

Begin with a manageable area—a closet, a drawer, or a single room. Pick up each item and ask yourself:

  • Have I used this in the past year?
  • Would I buy this again today?
  • Does this item add value to my life?

If the answer is no, it’s time to donate, sell, or discard the item.

2. Sort with Intention

Use these three categories as you go:

📦 Keep – Items you use regularly or that hold true sentimental value.
📤 Donate/Sell – Items in good condition that could benefit someone else.
🗑 Discard – Broken, expired, or unusable items.

3. Be Honest About "Just in Case" Items

We all have those things we keep thinking we’ll use someday. But if a whole year has passed and you haven’t touched it, how likely is it that you’ll actually need it? Trust yourself to let go.

4. Apply the Rule to Different Categories

The One-Year Rule works for:
Clothes – If you haven’t worn it in a year, you probably won’t.
Kitchen Items – Do you really need five spatulas?
Decor & Holiday Items – If it stayed in storage last season, it may be time to pass it on.
Paperwork – Digitize what you can and recycle what you don’t need.

The Bigger Picture: Creating Space for What Matters

At Caring Transitions of Winston Salem, we believe downsizing isn’t just about letting go—it’s about making room for new opportunities. By decluttering, you’re creating space for the things, people, and experiences that truly enrich your life.

If you’re preparing for a move, assisting a loved one with a transition, or simply looking to simplify, the One-Year Rule is a great place to start.
